The Decorations

Christmas Cupcake

When it comes to cake toppings and decorations, whether it’s for cupcakes or special occasion cakes, the options can feel overwhelming – especially if you’re new to baking.

So you’re now on your way to mastering the art of following baking recipes step by step, almost like a sacred ritual and got yourself a well formed, cooked cake!

Now comes the next hurdle – The Decorations..

While the taste is essential, we eat with our eyes first. So, now the question is – how do you make your cake look just as good as it tastes? Take it from me, my kids are notoriously picky eaters – one day they love strawberries, and the next, they’re covering up their mouths because strawberries are not their thing.

But here’s a secret, when it comes to cake, if it looks good, everyone is willing to try it.

Toppings and decorations don’t have to cost a fortune or take up all of your time. With a bit of creativity, you can achieve great results from a few tips listed below, using items from your local supermarket or even things you may already have at home:

  1. Match Your Theme with Colours:
Adjust your icing colour to suit the occasion. For a baby shower, use pastel shades like pink or blue (or a gender neutral yellow)
  2. Bring in their Favourite Characters:
For kids’ birthdays, raid the toy box. Small figurines of their favourite characters make perfect cake toppers. Not only does it add a personal touch, but it also doubles as a fun surprise when they spot their beloved toys on the cake.
  3. Sprinkle Some Joy:
Grab some everyday sprinkles from your local Coles. Holidays like Christmas – look for red/green and involve the kids, they’ll love sprinkling festive magic onto cupcakes just as much as they’ll enjoy eating them.
  4. Floral Elegance:
Flowers can add a simple yet stunning touch to your cakes. If you want a lasting decoration, consider using faux flowers, they’re inexpensive and can be reused for future events. If you prefer fresh flowers, make sure to choose the edible varieties or non toxic florals.

The beauty of cake decorating is that it’s accessible and fun for everyone, regardless of experience. Remember, there’s no such thing as the “perfect” cake. What matters most is the joy of creating something special and maybe even making a memory or two along the way.
